LETTER FROM HAPPY ENGLISH SCHOOL March 12th,2019

Hello. How are you? It is still chilly and we have many rainy days, which is typical in early spring. People can turn over a new leaf at this season. Whatever a new leaf you turn over, I would like you to continue to study English and take every chance to use it. This is the way how a foreign language is acquired. Try using the words and phrases you know and make them your own working vocabulary. You have to use them several times so that you can become familiar with them and sound natural with them when speaking.

There are a lot of things you have to learn in order to read, write, speak and listen to English. However, unless you practice using them, you will never put them in practice. Nobody can ride a bicycle, swim or ski by just reading manuals and understanding how to do all these things. Reading, writing, speaking and listening skills are obtained only through practicing. Practice makes perfect.

Language learning is a test on how tenacious you are in a way. You can develop your fortitude and courage in the process of mastering a foreign language. You yourself are the person who wants to make progress in a foreign language. You need to study and practice areas where you find weak, and to make further efforts. Never give up and step-by-step approaches of learning will eventually take you to the place you have never reached.

We are always with you when you need help with learning English. Why don’t you use us as much as possible? Practice English with us, ask us questions, and have us correct your English. As long as you study English in Japan, there is a long way to go until you become able to speak English fluently. We want to encourage you, motivate you and inspire you as hard as we can.

肌寒く、雨の多い早春です。新学習年度、４月から新たな生活を始める人も多いでしょう。生活が変わっても、英語学習を、特に英語を使う事を、常に意識して過ごしてください。英語は使ってこそマスターできるものです。言葉もフレーズも表現も数回使わなければ、実際に自然に口からついて出てくるものではありません。日本語で考えなくても英語で描写したり、説明したり、意見を言ったりするには相当の練習が必要です。英語は使って慣れる。学習も大事ですが、自転車に乗ったり、泳いだり、スキーしたりするのにマニュアルを読んでばかりしていても身に付きません。実際に自分でやってみることが肝心です。それ同様、実際に自分で英語を読んでみる、書いてみる、聞いてみる、言ってみる、そういうことをしてこそ英語がマスターできるというものです。

それは、質の問題でもありますが、また量の問題でもあります。易しい事柄から難しい事柄までたくさん量をこなす。英語の環境があればあるほど、読んだり、書いたり、話したり、聞いたりする機会が増える。これはとても大切なことです。日本では、ほとんどの人が英語を使う必要性がなく、練習するために英語を使う場を自分で作らなければなりません。英語を学習している者同士、ここHappy English Schoolの先生、英語の様々な教材、様々な生の英語(実際の英語の注意書きから、レセピーから、案内から、英語のサイトを使ってのショッピングから、メールから、新聞から、本から、雑誌から、番組から、映画から、動画からなどなど) 、比較的お手頃で安全なインターネットの会話のサイトなど、色々駆使して、練習する、質問する、自分の英語を修正してもらう等、大いに考えられるいろいろな方法で英語を実際に使うよう工夫してください。

弱いところを強化して、間違いを正しながら”Slow but steady sure wins the race.”で取り組んでいきましょう。
